The energy referred to as Reiki emerged
at the turn of the 20th century when a Japanese healer sought to develop a
healing modality that would allow the practitioner to maintain one’s own energy
during a healing session. It was introduced to the Western world around the mid
1900’s and is now widely accepted as one of the healing arts – a technique that
involves therapeutic touch.
The Japanese term Reiki consists of two characters; Rei and Ki, and is generally defined as Divinely guided Life Energy. This energy exists within and surrounding all living things, animating and connecting all forms of life. During a Reiki Session, the Practitioner draws the Reiki Energy from this abundant source and, with the intention to help the client balance and increase the flow and level of their energy field, acts as a “hollow bone” from which the client draws Reiki to them to achieve this goal. This heightened energy level can better support your physical, emotional and spiritual bodies to move towards a healthier state of being.
The “Reiki wave” helps to wash away obstacles we carry and induces relaxation, promotes mental clarity, raises vitality, speeds physical healing, comforts distress, increases the efficacy of medical treatments and reduces the need for pain medication. Reiki can also dynamically enhance spiritual growth and awareness. Reiki can be learned by anybody and is used throughout the world by people in a wide range of professions, as well as parents, caregivers and significant others. People are forever discovering new ways to apply this Healing Art form in their lives. Once you have been initiated into Reiki, healing energy will flow through your hands for the rest of your life.
It is important to understand the difference in what Reiki is and is not as there are many misconceptions about Reiki. Reiki is not a medical procedure nor a cure of any kind. Reiki is neither massage, meditation, psychotherapy, a religion, a magic pill nor even fortune telling. I simply refer to Reiki as an “Energy Treatment.” I prefer this term because Reiki is a form of energy that can work with the energy field of all things, enhancing them. In this sense Reiki is a very effective compliment to all other forms of treatment, medical and otherwise.
A Reiki session begins with you lying fully clothed on a massage table. I will lead you on a short breathing exercise to help you relax and then I will draw Reiki to me filling myself with energy to the point of overflowing. I will proceed to place my hands at various positions at your body where I sense will be most beneficial. Then based upon your choice, I will either leave my hands above your physical body or lightly place them at these locations so that you can draw Reiki from the overflow through the chakras in my hands. There is also the divine aspect to Reiki which brings it to where it is needed in your system and will work towards your highest good. But most importantly remember that YOU are in control of your healing process. Therefore you will always go as deep and as slowly or quickly as you are prepared to proceed at any given time. For this reason Reiki will never do any harm.
